Lights Out has been a SUCCESS!!

candlelight at nightThank you Catherine from The Life I Lead for your Lenten idea that has been a great success in our house.  On Sunday nights during Lent, we have been using Catherine’s idea to turn our lights out and power down.  You can read about our Lenten challenge here.

When supper is coming to a close, we rush around clearing the table, lighting candles and lanterns throughout the house, and turning on camping lights and flashlights.  We shut off the lights and turn off t.v.’s and computers.  Then those of us who are home congregate in the livingroom for an evening of games by candlelight, while leaving the dishes piled for Monday morning.

I hate to admit it, but we haven’t played games around here very often.  Which is a shame, because the kids really enjoy it, and so do I.  That’s one thing we really enjoy when we’re camping, and with the lights out, that is exactly what this reminds me of.

Week 1 we played Pictionary.  Week 2 we played Apples to Apples.  We’ve talked, and laughed, and even groaned together.  But the main thing is we’ve had fun together.   We look forward to our Power Down Sunday evenings.  Last week I even read by candlelight in the tub after everyone else went to bed (at a decent time!).  Very relaxing and peaceful.

This Sunday we have a birthday in our family, and when I told the birthday girl that we’d be playing games again after supper, she shouted a resounding, “Yes!” with her arms in the air.  Yup, a definite success.  I do believe we’ll continue Power Down Sundays evenings even after Lent is over.

I urge you to give it a try with your family.  Take the challenge to shut off lights and electronics, even if only for a few hours, to spend time together and make memories that will last a lifetime.  And don’t forget to laugh out loud!
