I always wanted to have a large family. I used to read stories in Reader’s Digest of large families and get excited. I thought I’d grow up and become a teacher and a missionary. I get to do both at home, teaching my kids and reaching out in ministry with them.
My husband and I like to tell people that we met in jail. After a few heartbeats, we tell them we were in prison ministry together and started dating a few months after meeting. My husband is crazy and won my heart quickly. He loves to laugh and makes me laugh. And he loves Jesus as much as I do.
When my first was just 6 months old I learned that I would become a mom a second time. I sat on the couch holding her, hyperventilating. Feeling ridiculous for being frightened, I turned to scripture and read Proverbs 31:25 “and she laughs at the days to come.” Peace filled me instantly and I wrote this verse on a card and posted it on the front of my fridge to be reminded of God’s promise daily. I never was overwhelmed by fear of a pregnancy again. I believe that motherhood is a vocation, and have given my whole heart to it. I have always been proud of my calling.
And still the kids make their own decisions. I have spent many nights awake worrying about my kids, and many hours praying for them. I have fought for them. As they leave the house my call is to continue to pray for them, that they can find their way in the dark back to the light. St. Monica, pray for us!
I always wanted to be a teacher. When I learned about homeschooling, even before I met my husband, it was something I hoped to one day do with my family. God is good, because that is exactly what happened. What started as a dream became a reality. As our family grew and our children grew, our schooling became less and less structured until we found a blessed place where our kids learned to learn on their own, with guidance from Mom. Older kids helped younger kids with lessons, and we all learned on our journey – together. I love having my children home with me, watching them mature as they go off to highschool, and watching them become responsible adults as they grow up and leave home. God is good!
